Mission 47

This past weekend we held the annual Cleveland Extravaganza Mission 47.

On November 23, 1962, crowds, in the brisk morning air outside Cleveland Public Hall, formed lines around the block. Many students attended the NASA’s 10 day Space Science Extravaganza fair sponsored by NASA and the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Public interest in the new space agency was high with the recent space activities including Mercury missions, planning for the Apollo, President John F. Kennedy announcing that the United States would land on the Moon, Walter Schirra completed a record six Earth orbits, and NASA Lewis (now Glenn) assumed responsibility for the Centaur and Agena rockets.

Fast forward to 2026, on the first weekend in May, there was a different Cleveland Extravaganza. Instead of the Cleveland Public Hall, we saw people standing outside the Best Western in Strongsville, Ohio with NASA theme jerseys. Instead of a 10 day Space Science fair,  it instead reminded us of a recent 10 day mission Artemis II, which on April 1, 2026, marked the first crewed flight to the Moon in over 50 years.

Our community has a long-standing connection to NASA. Much like NASA’s missions, many darters don't just have the goal of reaching their target— but to keep pushing beyond it.

If you like the game of darts, just being in the room and seeing the level of play from players like, Alex Spellman, Leonard Gates, Steve Warnock, Larry Butler, Paula Murphy, Cali West, and Tracy Feiertag made the weekend entertaining. However, even with their talent, the amount of Cleveland area players reaching the top of the events leaderboard, made us proud.  A few stand outs from our members incuded, Kevin Yasenchak Open Cricket Champion, Victoria Sulecki and Jenn Malek as Runner Up Champions in Doubles 501. Tony Rook was Runner Up Champion in Open 301. Matt Hulec and his partner Gretchen Weidus, taking Alex Spellman (Two time CDC Continental Cup Champion and ranked first in men's ADO) and Tracy Feiertag (number two ranked ladies ADO leader and qualified for the WDF championship at Lakeside) out in the first round of mixed doubles.

To some, a successful weekend may have been enjoying hanging out with new or old friends coming from other parts of Ohio, other states or even other countries. It may be playing a good match even if it resulted in a loss or making it into the money round. Whatever their goal was, we hope they achieved their mission 47.

We want to thank everyone who came and supported this tournament. Even if you came to watch, purchased food or drinks, or entered in events, every bit helped to keep this tradition going for more missions in the future. We had some large turn outs with 87 entered in the open 301, 114 in the open 501, and 50 teams for mix trips to name a few.

Some shoutouts to some of our Cleveland area players/members that placed high in their events are listed below. (If we missed anyone, I am sorry and please email us so we can add you.)
