Cleveland Darter Club at the Ohio Scottish Games
The Cleveland Darter Club set up a booth at the Ohio Scottish Games on the evening of June 26 and throughout the day on Saturday, June 27. This was the second year our club has participated, and once again it was a fantastic experience.
Our dartboards were set up, darts were ready to throw, and our volunteers were eager to share their knowledge, offer tips, and introduce visitors to the game we all enjoy.
Everyone who volunteers always says how much fun they have. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, encourage others to give darts a try, and represent the Cleveland Darter Club in a positive way. Peter Wright and Gary Anderson may not have been there, but we're sure they would have been proud!
A Little Scottish Darts History
Did you know that in 1939 the Burgh Licensing Court in Glasgow banned "all kinds of games" in licensed establishments because they believed they encouraged drunkenness—or, as they described it, "ne'er-do-wellism"? The Glasgow and District Licensed Trade Defence Association appealed the decision, and within a few months the ban was lifted for some games, including dominoes. Darts, however, remained prohibited.
The ban on darts in both Glasgow and Liverpool lasted until after the end of the Second World War. By 1949, Liverpool had become a hotbed of darts, and in the early 1950s Glasgow hosted Scotland's first-ever national darts championship.
It's amazing to see how far the sport has come!
If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, mark your calendar for next year's Ohio Scottish Games and consider volunteering at our booth. It's a fun way to promote the sport, meet new people, and spend time with fellow club members.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who volunteered and proudly represented the Cleveland Darter Club:
Derek Fess
Jenn Malek
Danny Russano
Chris Erkelenz
Dave Kopin
Gary Rice
Your time, enthusiasm, and dedication helped make another successful year at the Ohio Scottish Games. Thank you for representing our club so well!
We are also looking for volunteers for the Irish Festival July 17-19th. Please contact president, Derek Fess if you are interested.
We are looking for more volunteers for the Irish Festival. There will also be blind draws throughout the weekend of the Irish Festival.
